Zombies have been popular with the general public since the dawn of today. Series, movies, and books related to zombies have attracted a lot of attention and commercial success in the past few years. AMC’s The Walking Dead is one such example. There are hundreds of creative individuals who want to write zombie stories, but simply lack the knowledge to do so competently. For them, the University of California in Irvine is opening a college course on The Walking Dead. Yes, you read that right. With how varied the concept of “learning” in higher education is getting these days, it doesn’t really come as a surprise.

Besides, why shouldn’t they? The Walking Dead has earned a lot of fans all around the world to the point of immediate name recognition from any respectable zombie fan. Even the talk show sister of the series, known as the “Talking Dead” by Chris Hardwick, has gained a lot of popularity. Every day, more and more people are drawn towards it by word of mouth.

Fans all around the world can get a real education in Zombieness with this UC Irvine non-credit course that will be offered for free. The professors are masters in the fields of physics, social sciences, and public health.

Is it Just About Publicity?

Marketers speculate there’s a different motivation behind offering this course to the general public. This is a two-way marketing. For AMC, this is free publicity and more viewership. There will be more hype about the series and the course will draw more attention. On the other hand, the University will also benefit from the increased publicity and there might be an increase in applicants next year. This is a win-win situation for both the parties. Claiming that only AMC and UC Irvine will be benefited, though, is wrong – as the course is being offered for free, the general public will also benefit from it.

The class will start on Monday, Oct 14th, on the day after the new season premiers. The classes will utilize plots from the previous night’s episode and will use clips from the archive to create an interactive lesson. The course will cover a lot of topics and will help people learn how to prioritize their needs in a catastrophic situation, like the ones that they witness in The Walking Dead.

Academic

This is a fun non-credit course that will enhance your ECAs, not academic achievement. Aside from being lighthearted fun in an academic setting, this course is also a study to see how much culture gets conflated with academics. We have seen Star Trek courses, as well as Batman studies in the past, but zombie courses are relatively new. There are two other universities that offer such courses. UC Irvine will be the first to offer a course focused on The Walking Dead. The course professors will study the reactions of the fans and will report them to AMC. AMC will keep the statistics in hand and will try to make the series much better for a proactive audience experience. Batman and zombie courses are more related to the genre of the field they are studying in. The Walking Dead will be a first – a course based on a TV show.

There has already been a lot of interest for this course and it is expected to be the largest online course in history. Anyone can sign up for the classes. These classes are known as Massive Open Online Courses or MOOC for short. The course will run for eight consecutive weeks and you will be sitting for a short exam at the end. After you are done, you will receive your certificate online. You do not need to worry about the spoilers during the course – they will be few and appropriate warnings will be provided if they cannot be avoided.
